How we stay free
Low costs, published openly, shared by those who can
Hosting a text-and-PDF laboratory system costs pennies to a few pounds per laboratory each month. Donations from individuals and organisations, optional paid services and sponsorship cover the rest, and we publish the numbers.
Fair use
VipLIMS stores records, reports and attachments. Whole-slide images stay on your own image server. If a laboratory's storage or traffic grows far beyond typical use, we will talk to you about sponsoring your share before anything changes. We will never switch features off without warning.
If we ever shut down
At least 12 months' notice and a full export for every laboratory.

Pricing questions
Why is it free? What is the catch?
There is no catch: the marginal cost of hosting a laboratory is small, and we would rather every laboratory had a decent system. We do not show adverts, sell data or hold features back. Donations and paid services fund the work.
Will you start charging later?
The core system will stay free. If we ever introduce charges for something new, existing features will not move behind them, and we will give at least 90 days' notice of any change to these terms.
Can our organisation pay by invoice or purchase order?
Yes, for organisational donations, sponsorship and paid services. Contact us and we will send an invoice.
Do donors get extra features?
No. Supporters can appear on our supporter wall if they wish, and organisations get a thank-you, but every laboratory gets exactly the same system.
